Hand Pump Monitors
The first remote water monitor system was designed to be mounted on the spigot of the LifePumpTM, a specialized deep water hand pump created by Design Outreach. This special configuration collects shaft rotation and time-in-use data from sensors on the pump, and stores that information for up to 24 hours. The data is transmitted to the cloud via the Globalstar satellite system once a day, where Design Outreach and their partners can monitor the health of the pump. With this information, technicians know whether the pump is being used (rotations), for how long it is being used each day, and when it is nearing a preventative maintenance service call.

In Development
We are actively working on a monitoring solution for another highly-used hand pump: the India Mark II (IM2). According to several studies done by the RWSN (Rural Water Supply Network), and others, it is the most common hand pump worldwide. Estimates put India Mark II pump numbers well over 5 million globally, and as many as 30% of these are not functioning.
Our goal is to develop a monitor for the IM2 so that operation of the pump can be verified remotely, anywhere in the world.
